Here at Brooks, we have a diehard appreciation for iconic races and are excited to share a peek into the creation of our 2019 limited-edition Boston themed shoe, the Boston “T” Launch 6. It’s no surprise that we are especially fond of this race. Did you happen to catch Brooks athlete, Des Linden, dominate the competitive field and epic racing conditions of the 2018 Boston Marathon? To learn more about our 2019 Boston themed shoe, we sat down with Brice Newton, Brooks director of footwear merchandising to discuss how this shoe came to be.
What was the inspiration behind this shoe? What is the “T”?
We explored many options for the design of this year’s shoe. We were ultimately inspired by the city’s infamous transportation system and the spirit of running in Boston. From the perspective of a race fan, we also love the idea of hopping onto the “T” to follow along the iconic race route. The Boston “T” Launch 6 truly is a memento for those who run in Boston.
For runners passionate about logging miles in the storied streets of Boston, we want to help them find inspiration with an entirely new design. We love that the maps of the city streets and subway system speak to the experience of running and racing in Boston.
Boston is an iconic race and there are some popular symbols associated with the region. In the past we’ve featured anchors, lobsters (or lobstahs) and Nantucket inspired plaid. How did your team decide to try something different and feature the “T”?
We always strive to provide something new and fresh to the runner and it’s especially important to do that with a shoe as popular as this one.
As we brainstorm concepts for shoes, we often lean on the expertise of internal employees who live and breathe running, while also thinking outside of the box. Kate Locke-Peck, Brooks color and trend design manager, is from Boston and highlighted the fact that the “T” is an iconic Boston feature. It’s the oldest subway tunnel in North America and opened in 1897. We love that we’re able to incorporate this nod to the rich history of the city into a performance running shoe.
From an aesthetic perspective, a map of Boston’s subway system wraps around the heel while street and subway map lines cover the heel collar and tongue. The red, orange, green and blue lines of the “T” system can be seen as color pops on the shoe.
We know there are a lot of lobster fans, and we still give a nod to the lobster with some special details. The words “Boston 2019” appear on the heel, and in a nod to previous Boston-inspired Brooks shoes, red lobsters appear on the heel, tongue and as a surprise on the sock liner insole. Fun fact – the lobster is the one design element that has been incorporated into every Boston-themed Brooks shoe, in one form or another. We love how this Run Happy nod has been carried throughout each iteration!
How did we decide to use the Launch 6 as our footwear style to bring this Boston shoe to life?
Launch 6 is a great shoe for people who are participating in marathons. For many, it makes a great race day shoe or a favorite trainer. The lightweight flexibility of Launch 6 provides a springy and bouncy ride while the Energize experience helps to power you through your miles.
The Launch 6 features a new engineered, one-piece mesh upper and internal bootie for a breathable and lightweight fit. The shoe’s BioMoGo DNA midsole and rebounding rubber outsole offer a springy feel underfoot while a Midfoot Transition Zone gets the runner from heel to toe quickly.
Are there any surprises in the features of the shoe?
An unexpected feature is that the shoelaces resemble a boating rope, providing a nod to the nautical seaboard associated with Boston.
The limited-edition Boston shoe has quite a fan base, some returning year after year to check out the new design. Are there any hints about what folks can look forward to seeing next year?
You might notice that the upper colors seem a bit tame this year in comparison to previous years. All I can say is that next year’s version is going to be a return back to something a bit wild.
The Brooks Boston “T” Launch 6 will be available for men and women beginning Thursday, March 28th for $100 and can be found online at brooksrunning.com/boston.
